When I was a boy, I belonged to the boy Scouts(童子军),so I used to go camping every summer, and once something happened which I have never been able to explain.

We were camping in a place、above a river. After arriving,.we all rushed down to the river

and had a swim. Standing by the river, we noticed that it was surrounded by cliffs(悬崖). If someone wanted to reach the river at this point, he had to walk past our camp.

Several days later, the scoutmaster had to be away for a day. That afternoon, we had supper early. We were sitting round the fire, eating and talking, when a man walked past and went down towards the river. We all felt that this man looked very strange, but, because each of us was afraid of looking very stupid, no one said anything.

We ate rather slowly, taking as long as possible. After finishing, we collected our plates together so that we could take them to the river where we always washed them. But no one moved towards the river—we stood looking at each other ashamed. Then all shouting at once, we began talking about the man who had walked past us. We agreed how strange he looked and we wondered what he could be doing by the river. We knew that he could only return by passing through our camp.

An hour passed. Then one of the boys suggested we should creep (悄悄移动)down by the river so that we could see what the man was doing. Moving very slowly and keeping in the shadow, we crept down towards the bank. One boy climbed a tree so that he could see everything clearly. He called to us that there was no one there, so we ran down to the bank, looking everywhere carefully. We could not understand where the man had gone.

CHICAGO --Bill Clinton's eagerly awaited memoir(自传), My Life, will be published this June, and is sure to ignite(点燃)a firestorm of interest in an already politically charged election year. Bill Clinton said that most presidential memoirs are thought to be "dull and self-serving, but I hope mine is interesting and self-serving.”

My Life, which is being published by Knopf and will sell for $ 35, is expected by many industry watchers to rise to the top of the best-seller lists.

Clinton said the book tells the story of his life from his birth and childhood in Arkansas to his years in the White House. From the book readers can have a look at his successes and setbacks.

He tells the story “as it happens to me, so you see what it's like to be president ... to see how everything happens at once.”

Without offering specifics or mentioning Monica Lewinsky, Clinton said, "I don't spare myself" in the book.

Have you ever imagined what kind of car we will be driving in ? It will be rather different from the type we know today, with the next 20 years bringing greater change than the past 50. The people who will be designing the models of tomorrow believe that environmental problems may well accelerate(促进,加快)the pace of the car's development. Today they are students on the transport design course at London's Royal College of Art.

Their vision is of a machine with three wheels instead of four, electrically powered, environmentally clean, and able to drive itself along "intelligent" roads equipped with built-in power supplies. Future cars will pick up their fuel during long journeys from a power source built into the road, or store it in small quantities for traveling in the city.

Instead of today's seating arrangements--two in front, two or three behind, all facing forward—the car will have a versatile interior with adults and children in a family circle.

This view of the future car is based on a much more sophisticated(复杂的)road system, with strips built into motorways to supply power to vehicles passing along them. Cars will not need drivers, because computers will provide safe driving control and route finding. All the driver will have to do is to say where to go and the computer will do the rest. It will become impossible for cars to crash into one another. The technology already exists for the car to become a true automobile.

60. A future car will use electrical power, because it is .

A. safer B. cheaper C. cleaner D. faster

61. A future car will have all the following features EXCEPT .

A. being three-wheeled B. running without anyone in it

C. driving along special roads D. with a versatile seating arrangement

62. The underlined sentence "with strips built.., passing along them" means that there will be .

A. many traffic lights to control the speed of future cars

B. many street posts to indicate directions for drivers

C. many power sources along roads supplying power to cars

D. many stop marks along the street to stop cars

63. What is the main idea of the text?

A. Future cars will be completely different from the automobiles we know today.

B. The design of future cars will be more sophisticated.

C. Because of the new type of cars, our future environment will become cleaner.

D. The road system will become more sophisticated than it is today.

In the old days, children were familiar with birth and death as part of life. This is perhaps the first generation of American youngsters who have never been close by during the birth of a baby and have never experienced the death of a family member.

Nowadays when people grow old, we often send them to nursing homes. When they get sick, we send them to a hospital, where children are forbidden to visit terminally(晚期的)ill patients – even when those patients are their parents. This deprives(剥夺)the dying patient of significant family members during the last few days of his and it deprives the children of an experience of death, which is an important learning experience.

Some of my colleagues and I once interviewed and followed about 500 terminally ill patients in order to find out what they could teach us and how we could be of more benefit, not just to them but to the members of their families as well. We were most impressed by the fact that even those patients who were not told of their serious illness were aware of its possible result.

It is important for family members, and doctors and nurses to understand these patients’ communications in order to truly understand their needs, fears and fantasies. Most of our patients welcomed another human being with whom they could talk openly, honestly, and frankly (坦白地)about their trouble. Many of them shared with us their great need to be informed, to be kept up-to-date on their medical condition and to be told when the end was near. We found out that patients who had been dealt with openly and frankly were better able to deal with the coming of death and finally to reach a true stage of acceptance prior (在先的)to death.

64. The elders in America today .

A. were often absent when a family member was born or dying

B. were quite unfamiliar with birth and death

C. usually saw the birth or death of a family member

D. had often experienced the fear of death as part of life

65. Children in America today are deprived of the chance .

A. to learn how to face death B. to visit their family members

C. to look after patients D. to have access to a hospital

66. Five hundred terminally ill patients were interviewed with the main purpose of .

A. observing how they reacted to the crisis of death

B. helping them and their families overcome the fear of death

C. finding out their attitude towards the coming of death

D. learning how to best help them and their families

67. What may be concluded from the text?

A. Dying patients are afraid of being told of the coming of death.

B. Most doctors and nurses understand what dying patients need.

C. Dying patients should be truthfully informed of their condition.

D. Most patients are unable to accept death until it can’t be avoided.

Nowadays more and more people are interested in aerobic(adj. 健身操) exercises. There are many such programs on TV or you can just go to a club to learn the exercises. But here is some advice for you to follow once you decide to take them up or are just about to start.

First, get your doctor's permission to start an aerobic exercise program. He or she will check your physical condition and tell you whether it's safe to start exercising.

Make sure that each time you start with a warm-up period. You should stretch(伸展)your muscles and get them ready for your workout. Warm up for at least five minutes.

Then start actual training. Jog, bike, or do exercises that get your heart rate up to the target range. Depending on your age and your physical condition, aim to raise your pulse rate to be to between 140 and 160 beats per minute. Take your pulse during exercises to make sure that your heart rate doesn't get too fast. After the 20-minute aerobic exercises, start cooling down. Do a few gentle stretches while you catch your breath. If your heart rate does not return to a resting rate (about 70) within five minutes, you're working out too hard. Finally, during the recovery period, sit down and relax. The following graph(图表)will help you to learn about the safe pulse rate in each period.

Group–buying in China

Modeled after US hot website Groupon.com, group buying websites are now popular in China. These websites use the power of group buying to get competitive discounts (打折)for a daily deal on some best stuff to do, see, eat and buy in the cities across China. Discounts are available within just one click. Zhao lei, a software engineer in Beijing, loves the one-hour lunch break at noon, as it is the best time for him to check “today’s special” at his favorite group buying websites . In doing so, he often gets a certain cut off the price. At some sites, buyers are invited to leave notes about what they want to buy and the website will consider it if similar applications(申请)reach a certain number. Throughout the world, clothing has many uses. It is used to provide protection from cold. It is also worn to prevent others from seeing specific parts of one’s body. However, the parts of the body that must be covered vary widely throughout the world. Some clothing is worn to provide supernatural protection. Wearing a lucky shirt to take an exam is calling for supernatural assistance.

People in all cultures use clothing and other forms of bodily decoration to communicate status(身份), intentions and other messages. In North America, we dress differently for business and various leisure activities. North American women usually are much more knowledgeable of little difference in messages communicated by clothes than men. At times, this leads to silly mistakes of understanding of female intentions on the part of men. Of course, clothing styles also are intended to communicate messages to members of the same gender(性别).

Long before we are near enough to talk to someone, their appearance tells their gender, age, economic class, and often even intentions. We begin to recognize the important cultural clues at an early age. The vocabulary of dress that we learn includes not only items of clothing but also hairstyles, jewelry, and other body decoration. In most cultures, however, the same style of dress communicates different messages depending on the age, gender, and physical appearance of the individual wearing it.

Putting on certain types of clothing can change your behavior and the behavior of others towards you. This can be the case with a doctor’s white lab coat, or an army uniform. Most uniforms are clearly symbolic so that they can rapidly and unmistakably communicate status. For instance, the strange hairstyle and clothing of the English “punks” are essential aspects of their uniforms.

There are many fo rms of body decoration other than clothes that are used around the world to send messages. These include body and hair paint, and even body deformation. When doctors put braces on teeth, they are actually doing the same thing – deforming or reforming a part of the body to make it more attractive.

63. Which of the following is the best title for this passage?

A. Clothing and Culture B. Ways of Sending Message

C. Clothing and Social Behavior D. Communication through Clothing

64. Some people wear lucky shirts to take an exam because they believe .

A. clothes can hide their fear for the exam

B. clothes have extraordinary power

C. shirts can make them more comfortable

D. shirts provide protection against bad weather

65. From the passage, it can be inferred that .

A. clothing plays an important role in social activities

B. words of dress are unable to communicate different messages

C. dress is better than language in communicating messages

D. messages communicated by clothes are the same in different cultures
